There is a quiet confidence that runs through Erin McCallum's music. It doesn't demand attention through spectacle or trend-chasing; instead, it earns it through honest songwriting, lived experience, and a voice that carries conviction in every line. With the release of her new album, Full Spread, arriving on August 1, 2026, McCallum delivers her most complete artistic statement to date, one that embraces the full breadth of her musical influences while remaining firmly rooted in authenticity.

Across nine original songs, Full Spread demonstrates exactly why McCallum has become one of Canada's most respected voices in contemporary Roots music. Recorded at Ganaraska Recording Company and co-produced by McCallum alongside longtime collaborator Teddy Leonard, the album places songwriting firmly at its centre. Every lyric feels intentional, every arrangement serves the story, and every performance reinforces the emotional weight of the material.

The album's title couldn't be more fitting.

Rather than confining herself to a single genre, McCallum invites listeners into a musical landscape where Blues, Folk, Americana, Country, R&B, Rock, and New Orleans rhythms coexist naturally. It's a collection that celebrates the freedom to write songs without worrying about labels, a refreshing reminder that great music has always lived between the lines.

That diversity reveals itself immediately. The soulful warmth of "You Have It All" sits comfortably alongside the Country storytelling of "Lost Myself Loving You," while "Good, Good News" leans into a swaggering New Orleans groove coloured by unmistakable Bo Diddley influences. Elsewhere, "The Big Shout" and "Broken Lies" honour traditional Roots foundations while pushing confidently toward something unmistakably contemporary.

The result is an album that feels expansive without ever losing its identity.

One of the record's defining strengths is the creative partnership between McCallum and acclaimed Canadian Blues guitarist Teddy Leonard. Having shared stages together for nearly a decade, their musical chemistry has become one of the cornerstones of McCallum's live performances, and it translates beautifully into the studio.

Their co-written songs, "I'm Still Here (For Now)" and "I Need A New Lover," capture that relationship perfectly. Released earlier this year as the album's lead single, I Need A New Lover has already gained traction across streaming platforms and radio stations throughout Canada, the United Kingdom, Australia, and beyond. It's an infectious, groove-driven track that showcases McCallum's gift for balancing emotional honesty with memorable hooks.

The recently released official lyric video offers another window into the song's energy, reinforcing why it has resonated so strongly with listeners.

Rock influences surface on "Good Intentions," where Leonard's expressive slide guitar becomes another voice in the conversation, echoing the song's central theme of being misunderstood despite the best of intentions. It is these thoughtful production choices that elevate the album throughout, every instrument serving the narrative rather than competing with it.

The closing track offers something particularly special.

A newly recorded acoustic version of "Home," one of McCallum's best-known compositions, strips everything back to reveal both the durability of the songwriting and the artistic growth that has taken place since it was first written. It is a fitting conclusion to an album that repeatedly reminds us that strong songs don't require embellishment, they simply require honesty.

Behind the scenes, Full Spread benefits from an exceptional creative team.

Award-winning singer-songwriter, producer and multi-instrumentalist Jimmy Bowskill engineered the album while also contributing pedal steel and backing vocals. Multi-award-winning producer and musician Steve Marriner mixed the record, adding bass throughout alongside harmonica and backing vocals on selected tracks. Acclaimed percussionist Gary Craig and keyboardist Steve O'Connor provide a solid rhythmic and harmonic foundation, while respected mastering engineer Philip Shaw Bova brings the project to its polished finish.

Collectively, they never overshadow McCallum's vision. Instead, they amplify it.

In an era where genre boundaries continue to dissolve, Full Spread feels remarkably self-assured. It isn't trying to reinvent Roots music, nor is it interested in fitting neatly inside industry categories. Instead, Erin McCallum simply follows the songs wherever they need to go.

That freedom is the album's greatest strength.

With Full Spread, Erin McCallum delivers a record built on craftsmanship, honesty, and fearless musical exploration. It's an album that speaks directly to the human experience while reminding us that the strongest artists are often the ones who refuse to be defined by a single style.

Sometimes the best description is the simplest one.

This is music.
