Australian indie/alt-country rock band Mermaid Avenue have changed tack with the latest offering from their upcoming album 'Sugartown'. With a decidedly West Coast feel, the new single sails close to the shores of yacht rock and sings a lovelorn lullaby to the state of sun, sand, movies and moguls.
'California' pays homage to the romantic elements of the Golden State and brings up the iconic imagery that ignited our imaginations in the California of stage and screen. Decidedly laid-back, the song swirls dreamily around a sea of lap-steel guitar and piano that ebbs against a shore of fretless bass and understated, laconic drumming. Lead guitarist Chris Wong's soulful solo harks back to the great lyrical solos of the the West Coast in both taste and tone.
Mermaid Avenue continue to prove themselves as a band whose purpose is to serve the songs they write, and once again this has resulted in a tune that has been born into a genre other than the one they are traditionally associated with.
The song was recorded by Steve Robin at The Barn Studios, and mixed by iconic Australian producer Lachlan 'magoo' Goold (Midnight Oil, Kate Miller-Heidke etc).
