Toronto pop-folk singer, songwriter and actress Melanie Peterson launches “Somebody’s Somebody” – the first single and video release from her upcoming new EP/album – with a full band live concert at The Dakota Tavern in Toronto on Thursday, May 5, 2022. Opening acoustic set by The Alter Kakers at 7:00 p.m.
“Somebody’s Somebody,” an upbeat tune about finding love and perhaps how to keep it, was recorded at Revolution Recording in Toronto, and was produced and mastered by producer/musician Mitch Girio (Fraz Milne, Emma Cook, David Newland). The song features Peterson on lead vocals and acoustic guitar, along with Girio on lead guitar, Peter Collins on bass and backing vocals, “Lucky” Pete Lambert on backing vocals and Mark Mariash on drums. The official release date for the single, which will be available on all online music platforms, including Bandcamp and Spotify, is May 6, 2022.
Mitch Girio states, “When I first heard this song, I could feel the visceral drive and message. Melanie’s laser-focused words and melody made it easy to deliver the “no nonsense” attack of Mark Mariash and Peter Collins rhythm section. This is pure pop people!”
Peterson said, “The song is about a breakup that happened years ago between two friends of mine. They both still hold on to the memory of that relationship and I believe it’s because ultimately, they are each other’s somebody. Originally the song had a bit of a clunky outro, but then my producer Mitch suggested we end with the chords from the verse, and that gave it a strong ending.”
Blessed with a voice reminiscent of an early Joni Mitchell, and an ability to imbue her vocals with palpable and authentic emotion, Saskatoon born, Melanie Peterson has nimbly become one of the brightest lights on the Toronto music scene.
Previously, she has released a five-song EP called ‘After the Fall’ (2010), her first full-length album ‘Unbreakable’ (2013), a six-song cover EP titled ‘Read It On The Radio’ (2014), her second full-length album ‘Anywhere From Here’ (2016), a two-song EP called ‘Two’ (2017), original Christmas singles “Santa’s Sleigh” (2016), “When You Were Here” (2017) and “Christmas Breaks My Heart” in 2019 (a finalist in The Great American Songwriting Contest), a three-song digital EP titled “What You're Selling” (2018) and two singles in 2020, “We Got This” and “Tightrope,” from her six-song EP ‘We Got This’ (November 27, 2020).
