Acclaimed English folk musician Seth Lakeman is poised to captivate audiences once again with the release of his latest album, The Granite Way, set to arrive on 14th February 2025. This self-produced collection of songs not only celebrates Lakeman’s commitment to the folk tradition but also offers a deeply personal connection to the West Country’s rich storytelling heritage.
The first single, "One More Before You Go," is a joyous celebration of love, friendship, and shared moments. Featuring Ian Anderson and Ward Thomas, the track’s universal message is perfectly suited for the festive season, bringing warmth and connection when the world needs it most. The blend of Anderson’s iconic flute work and Ward Thomas’s heartfelt harmonies adds a layer of emotional depth to Lakeman’s evocative vocals.
Reflecting on the album, Lakeman explains: “Each song feels strongly connected through history to the moors and the sea. I had written the stories and songs beforehand and had the melodic tunes ready for us all to explore when we recorded in the room, and the musical interplay between this lineup really displays their appetite for sounds and subjects within the folk tradition.”
Recorded with a group of longtime collaborators, The Granite Way is steeped in the authenticity and passion that has defined Lakeman’s career. Tracks like “Charlotte Dymond” and “Black Fox” explore ancient tales with a fresh perspective, while songs like “Born to the Strain” and “Roll Back the Years” offer introspective reflections on resilience and nostalgia. The combination of Lakeman’s masterful songwriting and the ensemble’s live recording approach ensures a rich, textured listening experience.
To support the album, Lakeman will embark on a full-band UK headline tour starting 19th February 2025. The tour will see him performing in iconic venues such as Exeter Cathedral and London’s Union Chapel, alongside musicians Benji Kirkpatrick (guitars, banjo, harmonica), Ben Nicholls (bass), Cormac Byrne (percussion), and Alex Hart (vocals). Fans can anticipate an electrifying live experience, with the band recreating the vibrant energy of the album’s recordings.
Since his breakout Mercury Prize-nominated album Kitty Jay in 2005, Seth Lakeman has been at the forefront of the British folk scene. Over two decades, his career has included 11 studio albums, collaborations with artists like Robert Plant and Van Morrison, and tours across the globe. Celebrating his 20th anniversary in 2024, Lakeman remains as innovative and passionate as ever.
The Granite Way is a testament to Lakeman’s enduring ability to breathe life into ancient tales while crafting melodies that resonate with contemporary audiences. Pre-order the album now and immerse yourself in a journey through history, community, and the timeless beauty of folk music.
