Indigenous Music Celebrates National Indigenous Peoples Day With Free All Day Concert In Winnipeg
Indigenous Music is celebrating National Indigenous Peoples Day with a free all-day family-friendly concert at The Cube in Winnipeg’s Exchange District on June 21.
The Nistumee Neepinee Keesikow Concert will span the genres and spotlight 20 Indigenous artists from Manitoba along with a DJ playing music by Indigenous artists between sets, food vendors, and crafts by Indigenous artisans.
The live music lineup taking the stage features up-and-coming acts alongside more established performers for a packed day of inspiring Indigenous voices. Artists slated to perform include Becky Lou, Brandi Vezina, Daniel Désorcy, Drezden, Gator Beaulieu, JC Campbell, Jerry Sereda, Joe Maxim, Kris Paul, Kristen McKay, Kwiat, Low Budget Rock Star, Martin Desjarlais, Mic North, Nelson Little, Rhonda Head, riel., Stun, The Bloodshots, and Violet Vopni.
Performers will also have the opportunity to participate in Manitoba Music’s Sound Waves Music Meeting, which takes place June 23 - 25, to continue building their creative skill set and connect with industry experts and peers. Nistumee Neepinee Keesikow means “First Day of Summer” in the Swampy Cree dialect and has been shared by Elder Eric Robinson from the Pimicikamak Cree Nation (Cross Lake Band of Indians).
“We are so excited for these talented artists to take up space in the heart of Winnipeg to share their music with everyone on National Indigenous Peoples Day,” says Shaneen Robinson-Desjarlais, Indigenous Music Development Coordinator at Manitoba Music. “Artists from all across the province, including northern and western Manitoba, will be a part of this celebration, and it’s a great opportunity to enjoy their talent, experience their culture, and build new friendships and relationships all in the name of Indigenous music.”
The event was made possible by the support of FACTOR through the financial support of the Government of Canada and Canada's private radio broadcasters.
The Nistumee Neepinee Keesikow Concert is an initiative of the Indigenous Music Development Program at Manitoba Music, which was launched in 2004 to help artists and music entrepreneurs that identify as First Nation, Metis, and/or Inuit develop sustainable careers in the music industry in Manitoba as identified by a steering committee. The IMDP is funded by the Province of Manitoba and Manitoba Film & Music, and FACTOR through the financial support of the Government of Canada and Canada's private radio broadcasters.
