Grammy Award-winning singer-songwriter Alessia Cara is set to release her eagerly anticipated third album 'In The Meantime'.
After five years of nonstop touring and recording, quarantine provided a much-needed slowdown for the Canadian-born singer-songwriter. Her new album captures the downward spiral she experienced at the height of her popularity thanks to insomnia, anxiety, and a brutal work schedule.
"My largest coping mechanism is distraction and making light of things and suppressing as much as possible… but in reality, that’s just pushing [the problems] away,” Cara says. “When I started working on this album, I was dealing with a lot mentally, emotionally, and physically."
With therapy, some time off, and a lot of inner work, Cara climbed her way out of a dark period and set to work on her third record.
“The theme of duality is recurring on this next album, so it made sense to release two songs to introduce both ends of the thread,” Cara explained. “The first side being ‘Sweet Dream’ which represents the hardship & helplessness surrounding my last couple of years. It’s about insomnia and the hoops my brain jumps through at night while I’m supposed to be asleep. Never fun!
Then on the flip side, there’s ‘Shapeshifter’ which is witty and sophisticated in a way that I feel represents the more mature and light-hearted parts of the album. I had to go through lots of pain to regain my footing and this song feels unwavering, despite it not being about the happiest of things.”
Cara has received nominations for four Grammy Awards, winning the Best New Artist in 2018. She was nominated for Song of the Year and Record of the Year at the 2019 Latin Grammys for her collaboration with Juanes on "Querer Mejor". Her second studio album, The Pains of Growing (2018), saw the moderate commercial success of the singles "Growing Pains" and "Trust My Lonely".
