Chuck Jackson and Teddy Leonard were formally presented with their induction certificates from the Blues Hall of Fame® on Sunday, May 4th at Roc’n Doc’s

In a celebration that brought together music, memory, and mastery, Canadian Blues legends Chuck Jackson and Teddy Leonard were formally presented with their induction certificates from the Blues Hall of Fame® on Sunday, May 4th at Roc’n Doc’s in Port Credit, Ontario. The event, charged with emotion and overflowing with talent, honoured two titans of the Canadian Blues scene — both now recognized as “Master Blues Artists” by the organization’s Canadian representative.

Though their official induction took place a number of weeks prior, this springtime gathering allowed fans, fellow musicians, and friends to witness the live presentation of the honours. The inductions were officiated by none other than Canadian Blues artist, singer-songwriter, and The Sound Cafe’s own Erin McCallum, who served as the Canadian representative for the Blues Hall of Fame®. The moment marked not only a personal milestone for Jackson and Leonard but also a proud chapter for Canada’s Blues community on the global stage.

The setting was fitting: a packed house at Roc’n Doc’s, a staple venue in the Port Credit music scene and a regular haunt for Blues matinees led by Jackson himself. The event was free of charge, staying true to the spirit of accessibility and appreciation that the Blues Hall of Fame® strives to foster.

The afternoon featured a powerhouse lineup with guest appearances from a number of well know musicians from near and far, including John Bride, vocalist Erin McCallum and others. The venue was standing-room-only as the crowd soaked up a joyous and deeply felt afternoon of live music.

One of the event’s most poignant moments came after the presentation when Jackson and Leonard took to the stage as a duo to perform “Biscuits and Beans,” a soulful original penned by Jackson himself. The two have recorded the song together in studio, and their live rendition — seasoned by decades of friendship and shared musical history — drew thunderous applause.

Chuck Jackson’s impact on the Canadian Blues landscape spans more than 50 years. From his role in the iconic Downchild Blues Band to his earlier days with the Cameo Blues Band, and as the founder and Artistic Director of the Southside Shuffle festival, Jackson’s résumé is a testament to sustained excellence. His mantle is decorated with Juno Awards, multiple Maple Blues Awards, the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee Medal, and two Lifetime Achievement Awards — but it’s his voice, his harmonica, and his commitment to live performance that keep fans coming back, year after year.

Teddy Leonard, whose name is synonymous with finesse and fire on the guitar, has built a remarkable 45-year career. Known for his tenure with the Juno-winning Fathead and his ongoing work with the Maple Blues Band, Leonard has over 50 recorded works in his professional catalogue and played alongside Blues royalty such as Colin Linden and Hubert Sumlin. His accolades are many, but it’s his unmistakable tone and humility that have cemented his place as a revered figure in Canadian music.

Their induction into the Blues Hall of Fame® brings global recognition to two artists whose influence has long resonated at home. Founded in 1999, the Blues Hall of Fame® honours artists worldwide, shining a spotlight on those who have significantly contributed to the genre. Thanks to the dedication of the Canadian delegation, led by McCallum, more of the nation’s Blues greats are finding the international spotlight they deserve.

Chuck Jackson and Teddy Leonard’s stories remind us that the Blues is more than a genre — it’s a lifelong conversation between artist and audience, past and future, heart and soul.

As the applause rang out at Roc’n Doc’s and “Biscuits and Beans” echoed through the room, it was clear: these are not just inductees. They are legends, still writing their chapters in the ever-evolving book of the Blues.

Erin McCallum, a touring blues musician herself, was instrumental in facilitating this momentous occasion. With formal post-secondary education in media studies from Humber College and mentorship under Canadian News Hall of Fame inductee Robert Holiday, Erin’s dedication to music extends beyond the stage.

A respected voice in music and investigative journalism, Erin has contributed to The Sound Cafe with an exclusive monthly column. Through this column, she shines a spotlight on Canadian musicians and industry professionals within the Blues & Roots genres.
